Many times we hear people say "I can drive but only automatic cars" but we barely hear people say "I can drive but only manual cars". so, the question is, what makes one to drive automatic car but can not be able to drive a manual car or vice versa?π We would definitely look at that into details in our future articles but for now, lets look at how you can drive a manual car. Here are the steps you should follow;
1. Know the Car

Before you even turn on the key, it's a good idea to get to know the car you're about to drive. get seated in the driver's seat , fasten your seatbelt and make sure the seat is positioned (adjusted) so you can push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor with ease. Try engaging (pushing) the clutch pedal in a couple of times, keeping your right foot on the brake or use the hand brake to make sure the car doesn't move. Take a look at the shift pattern on the gear selector knob and be sure the selector is in neutral.
2. Start the Car
Now it's time to start the car. observe the following steps:
- With your left foot, press the clutch pedal all the way down to the floor (thus if your first gear in already engaged if not, jump to step 2).
- With your right foot, step on the brake.
- Release the emergency brake, and once again, confirm that the gear shifter is in the neutral position.
- Turn the key in the ignition. The car should start up.
3. Shift Into First Gear
4. Drive Forward
You're ready to move! This is how you the car forward:
- Move your right foot so it is hovering over the gas pedal.
- Very slowly, begin to lift your left foot off the clutch. you will notice at a point that your steering wheel vibrates higher, is called the "the clutch bite" and the car tries moving forward (the only thing holding the car from moving at this stage is brake). at this stage you can disengage the brakes. Ideally, this will be a gradual, smooth movement, and it will result in the car gently rolling forward. All it takes is practice. If the engine goes off, return to "Start the Vehicle" to restart it.
- Remove your left foot from the clutch and continue driving (gas pedal can be pressed slightly).
